Dielectric Strength Testers

In physics, the term dielectric strength testers has the following meanings:

  • Of an insulating material, the maximum electric field strength that it can withstand intrinsically without breaking down, i.e., without experiencing failure of its insulating properties.
  • For a given configuration of dielectric material and electrodes, the minimum electric field that produces breakdown.
  • the maximum electric stress the dielectric material can withstand without breakdown

The theoretical dielectric strength of a material is an intrinsic property of the bulk material and is dependent on the configuration of the material or the electrodes with which the field is applied. At breakdown, the electric field frees bound electrons. If the applied electric field is sufficiently high, free electrons may become accelerated to velocities that can liberate additional electrons during collisions with neutral atoms or molecules in a process called avalanche breakdown. Breakdown occurs quite abruptly (typically in nanoseconds)., resulting in the formation of an electrically conductive path and a disruptive discharge through the material. For solid materials, a breakdown event severely degrades, or even destroys, its insulating capability.

Factors affecting dielectric strength

  • it increases with the increase in thickness of the specimen. (Directly proportional)
  • it decreases with the increase in operating temperature. (Inversely proportional)
  • it decreases with the increase in frequency. (Inversely proportional)
  • it decreases with the increase in humidity. (Inversely proportional)

HIPOT Testing - Clare Horizon

Safe Hipot testing with Clare Horizon

The Horizon II, the latest generation of wiring analyzer from Clare Instruments, incorporates several new features and capabilities which extend its range beyond validation cable testing, connectors and harnesses up to 1500 DC/1067V AC.

The all-in-one high voltage wiring analyser meets the requirement for an easy-to-use, fully integrated and flexible data management tool offering virtually unlimited data storage and reporting capabilities.

A new label printing capability allows the user to control fonts, logo, columns, barcode serialisation and user-defined fields such as test results, custom strings, product name, date/time, operator ID, batch/lot no.

Clare manufacture a wide range of electrical test equipment and power tool safety equipment including ground and earth bond testers & luminaire testing products.

The Clare testers also ensure that the cookers meet safety compliance requirements of the low voltage directive and all major international standards including EN 50191 and EN 50106.

Dave Connelly, technical projects engineer at GDHA, said testing using the HALs has helped the company launch its new induction technology appliances.

“The HAL is an excellent and versatile instrument, providing fast, efficient and reliable safety testing of our products, saving time and money in the process. It’s also enables us to test more intelligently.

Clare’s HAL flash/HiPot tester, HAL Scan multi point flash/HiPot tester and scanner and the HAL Combi four function electrical safety tester are all equipped with specialist technology to simplify test programming, by employing bar codes as part of a system providing full test results traceability.

Tests can be quickly configured into the tester by scanning in pre-defined bar codes that operate as test codes, making the equipment ideal for any ISO traceable application in quality control, conformance, or production line testing applications.

These pre-defined bar codes can be generated directly from the test equipment on adhesive labels, using the Test and Tag printer, or from proprietary Microsoft PC applications. These barcodes can be incorporated into live test procedure documents or the manuals required as part of ISO quality systems.

Specialist software and a large capacity internal database give the new generation of test instruments the ability to store test details and results against individual equipment serial numbers. Test reports can be downloaded directly to a PC or printer for the production of complete test data records.

In addition, the networking of test data with central management information systems allows the test station to become an important MIS data collection point, not only in identifying failure rates, but also by providing details of productivity levels and other information as part of quality audit trails.

Incorporating a stylish new case design for space efficient bench testing and equipped with highly intuitive user interface, operation of the HAL range of testers is achieved through the use of programmable soft keys and a rotary switch used in association with a large graphical display.

All HAL testers comply with the EN50191 safe operation of test equipment standard and are the only product available with fully isolated test outputs, making it the safest Flash/HiPot tester in the world.

What is 17th Edition Installation Testing?

What is Installation Testing (17th Edition)

The 17th Edition IEE wiring regulations is an update to the old 16th edition regs.

The 17th edition guidelines were published on January 21st 2008.

All commercial and domestic installations must conform to these standards and it's worth noting that to bring this into line with the European documentation & system this version does have some significant difference to the 16th edition.

Who is Affected?

This most recent edition of the regulations will also be important to surveyors, local authorities, electricians, electrical contractors, consultants and architects as well as many other allied trades involved in electrical work.

This now includes landlords, employers, surveyors & others.

Aircraft Ground Lighting - AGL

Aircraft ground lighting systems meet the critical role of ensuring that airports rmain operational at all times - including at night and during adverse weather.

What is an AGL?

AGL systems are the network of lights and circuits that heklp to guide aircraft in take-off, taxiing and landing at airports.

It is clearly essential that these are functioning correctly at all times. The responsibility for this invariably rests with the airport electrical maintenance or elctrical lighting teams.

Give the growth in air travel, maintenance teams ofeten face the constraints imposed by reduced time to access airside installations to carry out their duties.

Seaward manufacture the AGL5 an aircraft ground lighting tester - AGL tester. They are industry leading PAT Tester & electrical test equipment manufacturers.

D07 Plus - D07Plus

Cropico D07 Plus - D07Plus

The DO7Plus is a 10A microhmmeter, suitable for applications within Aerospace, Utilities, Cable or Machine Manufacturers or where a cooling curve is required to plot peak resistance. Sealed in an IP67 case (when closed or IP53, lid open) it is ruggedly constructed to ensure durability.

The DO7Plus microhmmeter has a backlit LCD graphics panel, full QWERTY keyboard, temperature compensation via optional PT100 probe, and built in coefficients for Copper and Aluminium as well as user defined. Full cooling curve facilities are built in, with real time graphical plotting on the LCD. Data log memory contents can be plotted and a curve fitted to calculate the peak resistance value when t=0.
